If its the Horus Heresy, then you just need the first three books to establish a baseline. After that its just which parts of the civil war you want to read about. Its not one continuous storyline really, just several books describing what X or Y legion did during the war.

Most of them are shit, but the likes of Fulgrim, A Thousand Sons, and Know No Fear are worth reading imo.
