What does /lit/ think of Against the Day? Is this one of the Pynchon novels that require a lot of outside resources to really appreciate the text or is it only difficult in terms of its length? I heard the prose is pretty accessible.

I went to a bookstore and asked about Thomas Pynchon's book Against The Day. So the lady said this book was $350, Is this book really that expensive?

Is this Pynchons worst book? It had a few scattered moments but was a total slog with no redeeming characters or plot lines. The era it focuses on was interesting but never zeroed in on a subject to grip the reader.

Big GR fan but think m&d is overrated. AtD is officially my least favorite, taking the spot from V. Which i read really young so may need to give another shot. Still need to read IV. Liked vineland, bleeding edge, and crying a lot too.

How would you rate your pynchons?

Can we just take a moment to appreciate post-Vineland Pynchon? His prose became so much more fluid, less clever. Against the Day is undervalued in his oeuvre, imo.

The laziness of modern blah blah prevents people from reading 1,000 page books but god damn.

Sometimes he speaks in double, around page 600 he makes a meta-commentary on all his books. But it has to hit you like an illusion to understand. If you try to hard it disappears.

Does it get better? I started this after having read V which i actually liked, but this is pretty much V, just longer, less interesting characters, slower moving and with less action, and worst of all, written with really ugly language.

The only thing cool is the time travel memes, the cult meme as well as the anarchism meme, but if i need 50 page sections of some morons introspection between every short chapter where stuff actually happens i really dont think its worth it. I honestly only picked this up because airships and time travel have a really cool aesthetic, but of the 600 pages i've read so far mabye 20 or 30 have been dovoted to that.
