Eva is worth a watch if you are or have been a depressed nerd, it really goes into the heads of miserable people. It's even helped a lot of people get over problems in their lives.

If that doesn't interest you the only other real appeal is giant robots, action choreography and waifu's. The science-fiction is too incoherent to really be enjoyed on its own in my opinion and the most of the symbolism seems to be there for style more than anything else.

Watch it in Japanese if you're going too, English dub isn't bad, you still get the same general story, but the delivery is nowhere near as good.

Anime should have ended at Evangelion, episode 26 was a perfect way for the medium to die. A complete deconstruction of otaku with strong catharsis and a message nerds could live by.

That or Gunbuster, because Gunbuster was and still is objectively perfect. Anime could have ended there and I wouldn't have minded.

I feel like I owe a suggestion after all this crap. OP, if you're reading this; go watch Royal Space Force: The Wings of Honneamise.

It's a great movie that doesn't feel very anime-ish, it's an incredibly human story that should resonate with a lot of people and very solid science-fiction.
