if I ever have kids, my kids are not getting an allowance. Hear me out, let me cook:
I have devised a perfect strategy in order to inspire avid pursuit of knowledge
for every 100 pages my kid(s) read, they get 1$ (adjusted for inflation, eventually might be 5$ or something.) as long as they can tell me what happens in the book within those 100 pages.
For every word they did not know the meaning of, they are to come to me and use context clues to try to define the meaning
if they discern the meaning, or I discern the meaning for them by showing them the surrounding text and sampling from a dictionary if need be, they get 1$
the 100 pages is a flat rate, but with hard words being so prioritized it basically incentivizes them to pick books way above their normal reading level
which gives their brains a very good workout
I did this without the incentives as a kid, but I really want my future kids to do the same.
I'll probably put their $ total up on a whiteboard, and hide the marker
if they draw a new $ total, if it's within <20% increase, I'll let them keep it and praise them for being cunning, ethics aside
but won't let them do it again, or there would be some form of punishment/negative consequence
at BARE minimum this should stoke reading comprehension
and I'll let my kids read whatever tf books they want, because knowledge is power. you wanna read American psycho at 8? ok sure but don't idolize the character

and I'll probably invest about a thousand dollars into a personal library if the public education system strays away from books
or maybe just do that anyway
and categorize them based on difficulty and genre
the hardest books will be in an easily reachable small bookshelf
and then there will be one or two normal-sized bookshelves with easiest at the bottom and hardest at the top
I consider Goosebumps easy desu. but stuff like Infinite Jest would be the very tippy top
