I've around 400 dollarydoos left after paying rent each month and I've no trouble finding books for cheap.
I also have a /lit/ family who gift me stuff, but even if I didn't I'd still have a lot of books. You just have to buy used books and check out sales at antiquarians and stuff like that, and there are a couple of places on campus where the different institutes put out the books that have been discontinued from the library or that have been purged from the professors' personal libraries.
