Why is this book respected? What sensible person would act the way Raskolnikov did? Why does Dostoyevsky imply that great men have free reign to kill, when in fact every man has either the same right or no right at all to kill?

I had a really weird experience with this book. I was in college, abusing Adderall, and not talking to anyone when I read the book. I had always had those thoughts of killing people just to see if I had it in me. I felt like I was reading events about my future. It made me feel ashamed that I ever had those thoughts. I began to believe that the book was so close to reality, and that my decision to read it was so random, that it couldn't be an accident. I was a strong atheist before that book. I wasn't afterwards. I began to see Sonya as Jesus, and began to doubt the randomness of the world.

Now here's another example why slavshits shouldn't ever master the art of writing things down.

Planning on reading this, as well as War and Peace (perhaps not soon, but I do intend to read it this year). What should I be expecting? Should I read anything beforehand?

isnt reading translated literature inherently inferior and untrue compared to reading the novel in it's original language? how can anyone who's read a translated version of, say, crime and punishment actually claim that they've truly read the book?
