Ive just finished the german edition of 2666. It really felt like the culmination of his work thus far; an evil brother to the much lighter and funnier The Savage Detectives.
Needless to say there is a lot to unpack and discuss in the book, and i cant way to get my second reading started.
I want this to be a discussion thread about the book and Bolano and his ouevre in general; to get it started, here are some of the notes i wrote down in order to get the most out of a re-reading, almost like questions to the text:
>Whats does the swabian see in the dark outside the window?
>What role do mirrors play?
>Are there any distinct traces of Arturo Belano in the prose/narration (i only found one, in part 5)
>What role do fate and coincidence play (esp. Johns definition of them in the first part)
>Is Archimboldi Bolanos archetype of a perfect writer?
>Is Bolano right to value giant tomes (e.g. Moby Dick) higher than the authors smaller and less ambitious work (e.g. Bartleby)?
>Why did Johns cut his hand off/do we believe his story?
>There is undoubtedly a connection between some characters in the book, most prominently Haas and Reiter. What makes us (the readers) feel that way?
>What happened to the austrian border patrol officers?
>What role does Ansky play in the transformation from Reiter to Archimboldi
>Whats up with Amalfitano knowing the person in the black peregrino at the end of part 2?

I could continue on endlessly and have intentionally omitted most philosophically charged questions/ideas as these tend to derail threads
