I doesn't really matter though. Montreal is almost at Toronto levels of cultural dissolution. You don't even need to know French to live there anymore. Just worship brands and speak broken English.

There was never going to be peaceful coexistence in the new world. It started with the seven years war and the Acadien expulsion. The french and first nations got the short end of the stick, and grudge have stuck around until today.
I expect in a few generations time we will go the way of USA with the cultural rift being between "new Canadian" immigrants and early European Canadians. Lots of people are forgetting the feud in the global cities like Montreal and Halifax but tension is still there. My English speaking grandmother grew up in NB around hostile neighbours, they would throw rocks at each other. French kids still ride different school buses than English. In NB voting is still based on the language makeup of the party for the older generations. Its even stronger in Quebec, like you see with some anons in this thread. Read about the October crisis.
