I've been reading my way through Discworld for the first time (publication order; just finished Jingo and started in on The Last Continent) and I've gotta say I'm enjoying it. Some books are definitely better than others but overall they've been quite enjoyable. I'd say my favorites so far have been Lords and Ladies, Reaper Man, Small Gods and Pyramids and my least favorites have been Soul Music, Maskerade, Eric and Interesting Times.

Depends on what you go in for, really. If "person being stalked by monster" blows your skirt up then I can recommend Cujo wholeheartedly, if you want something more eldritch then try some Lovecraft (The Call of Cthulhu is a good starting place, as is The Shadow Over Innsmouth and The Dunwich Horror) or Pet Sematary and if you want a tried-and-true classic then try Dracula or The Great God Pan by Machen. There's also It if you want to hop right into a cocaine-and-liquor-fueled doorstop but I wouldn't recommend it.
