In Ireland and Chile abortion is still illegal, Catholic countries are usually much more socially conservative than Protestant ones. If you look at the history of various liberal social causes (e.g. abolition of slavery, women's suffrage, civil rights movement) you'll find that Protestants were behind most of them.
