I still get letters in the mail, mostly from cracked-up
Men in tiny rooms with factory jobs or no jobs who are
Living with whores or no woman at all, no hope, just
Booze and madness.
I get most of their letters on lined paper
Written with an unsharpened pencil or in ink
In tiny handwritings that slants to the left
And the paper is most often torn
Usually halfway up the middle
And they say they like my stuff,
I've written from where it's at,
They recognize it truly, I've given them some
Chance, some recognition of where it's at.
It's true, I was there, even worse off than most of them.
But I wonder if they realize where their letter arrives?
Well, it's dropped into a box on a wire fence
Behind a six-foot hedge and a long driveway
To a two car garage, rose garden, fruit trees,
Animals, a beautiful woman, mortgage about half
Paid after a years residence, a new car-
Two cars,
Fireplace and a green rug two-inches deep
With a young boy to write my stuff now,
I keep him in a ten-foot square cage with a
Typewriter, feed him whiskey and raw whores,
Belt buckle him pretty good three or four times a week.
I'm 60 years old now and the critics say
My stuff is getting better than ever.

Go to Tibet
Ride a camel.
Read the bible.
Dye your shoes blue.
Grow a beard.
Circle the world in a paper canoe.
Subscribe to The Saturday Evening Post.
Chew on the left side of your mouth only.
Marry a woman with one leg and shave with a straight razor.
And carve your name in her arm.

Brush your teeth with gasoline.
Sleep all day and climb trees at night.
Be a monk and drink buckshot and beer.
Hold your head under water and play the violin.
Do a belly dance before pink candles.
Kill your dog.
Run for mayor.
Live in a barrel.
Break your head with a hatchet.
Plant tulips in the rain.

But don’t write poetry

I was sentimental about many things: a woman’s shoes under the bed; one hairpin left behind on the dresser; the way they said, 'I’m going to pee.' hair ribbons; walking down the boulevard with them at 1:30 in the afternoon, just two people walking together; the long nights of drinking and smoking; talking; the arguments; thinking of suicide; eating together and feeling good; the jokes; the laughter out of nowhere; feeling miracles in the air; being in a parked car together; comparing past loves at 3am; being told you snore; hearing her snore; mothers, daughters, sons, cats, dogs; sometimes death and sometimes divorce; but always carring on, always seeing it through; reading a newspaper alone in a sandwich joint and feeling nausea because she’s now married to a dentist with an I.Q. of 95; racetracks, parks, park picnics; even jails; her dull friends; your dull friends; your drinking, her dancing; your flirting, her flirting; her pills, your fucking on the side and her doing the same; sleeping together

this guy kept writing about rape. was he a literal rapist?

What are your opinions on Charles Bukowski's novels?

I've got a creative writing homework to do for next week.

I'm suppose to write some letters that Bukowski and a person wrote to each other. 5 letters.

I thought about doing some letters he sent to a stripper. I've already got the first one but I can't thing about anything for the four other. What could they talk about ? If you got ideas...

Watched a documentary on this guy, which had samples of his poetry, which I liked. Is his prose worth reading too?

Is it time for a Beat thread? I think it's time for a Beat thread. I just finished listening to an album of Bukowski's poetry, and he seems to be having a really great time, even despite the fact that his poems are mostly about how old and disgusting he's becoming.

Explain Bukowski to me. Why do people like this drunken asswipe?

Was he right about anything? Was he a manchild?
