It's a pretty quote, Mr Eliot, but what do you actually mean? That every writer since has been influenced by either Shakespeare or Dante? That no writer has reached the heights of the two? That one only needs to study these two poets?

Shakespeare's epithet is 'the Bard'
Dante's epithet is 'il sommo poeta' or 'the Highest Poet'.
The fact that no other writer has an epithet just goes to show how far Shakespeare and Dante have transcended literature.
