Hi /lit/

If I'm interested in majoring in Economics what are some good primer books before I head off to college?

I already studied up the basics (fundamentals of feudalism, socialism, capitalism, etc.) down to head terms and their definitions, but otherwise I have yet to engulf myself in the must-reads. And yes, I want to be as eclectic as possible, I'm not partial to laissez-faire or its antitheses. Thank you in advance.

How do Marxists deal with the fact that the labor theory of value is wrong? Does it not call into the question the entire foundation of Marxist theory?

/lit/,
I have a question. I'm not much of a philosophical writer, and I'm having a really hard time writing about Marx.

Could anyone help me out in describing the metatheoretical commitments of Marx? Particularly in his writing " A contribution to the critique of political Economy".

So far, I feel I've understood his ontological statement, being that " The mode of production of material life conditions the general process of social, political and inellectual life. It is not the consciousness of men that determines their existence, but their social existence that determines their consciousness."
From this, is Marx suggesting that the nature of the world and society is dependent on the economic structure? And that our consciousness is not individual from this. It is the our relations ( the worker to the capitalist) that decides our social consciousness.

I have no idea what is going on right now.

Basically, I just need help explaining Marxist metatheory and its three components: Ontology, Epistemology and Normative Recommendations.

ok, /lit/. lately i've been thinking a lot about banks, and my conclusion is that are useless superstructures, products of a sick economy. They insist on turn upside-down the relation work-->money (money can be view as a reification of the ownership of reals), I mean: ideally, to start a business, the foundamental thing is the work, not the money. So the bank would be useless. i know it's pretty much utopian, but i prefer to not consider the evil naure of the man (for example, i don't consider the bank as an istitution born to defend money from thiefs). It would imply the moral question, and it would became too complicate.

so, what's your opinion about it?
also, don't try to applicate your models on the nowdays economy: i'm talking ideally.

>I wonder about the psychology of a person from a wealthy background defecting and siding with abused and downtrodden classes.
I guess people feel betrayed by the system, or have been exposed to particular horrors of that system.

Let's try this again, I didn't get much recommendations last time.

Give me books about the development of socialist and communist thoughts and how they led to the revolutions.
I've been reading about Marx and looking to go from there.

Also, what would you say is a good comprehensive account of the Russian Revolution?

Lately I've been interested in works by socialist/communist theorists. I've already read quite a bit of Marx and Engels, where do I go from here? Lenin? I would much appreciate if somebody gave me a vague chronological reading list.

So I downloaded a bunch of books in the "A Very Short Introduction" series and started reading the one about Marx (by Singer), I'm pretty much impressed by how well he does it, I'll be sure to read his other stuff.

And also a question to those who are familiar with the series, how good is it in general? Are there any authors I should avoid?

Why is it that what is read in American schools is pretty much exclusively by westerners. I mean, shit, I could only name a handful of writers or poets from the southern hemisphere, and I only know them from History classes. I'm not asking for racism. Is this another example of white guys protecting the interest of other white guys, or is there really that little to be learned from Africa and South America?
