Yeah my fantasy setting doesn't use golden coins as currency.
People use crystalized blood shards because the noble class is composed of vampires (kinda), so they don't charge taxes in gold but rather in blood. This practice has extended so that everyone uses their own blood for trading goods too now.
And no, I don't care that it doesn't make any sense. It's fucking cool.
