I'm a big fan of this book, in which Kesey starts out in present tense with a scene from the end of the story, then goes into past tense, which leads up to that scene. I'm thinking of doing something like that.

I really enjoyed it. It's tough to make really metaphor-laden books work, but Kesey does it very well.

This is his best book, btw

In my opinion it's this.

This should replace Cuckoo's Nest without question. This book is as Oregon as it fucking gets.

OP when you are done with Cuckoo's Nest, read this. It's Kesey's masterpiece, and may very well be the best American novel of the latter half of the 20th century

Anything similar to this? I'm almost finished with it and absolutely fucking love it.

Every character is incredibly fleshed out and it tells an amazing story

Not necessarily a history of unions, but this is a fantastic book that is centered around a Northwest logging union dispute that has quite a bit to say.

on a related note, what does /lit/ think of Kesey?

I think pic related is a true masterpiece. Cuckoo's Nest is also brilliant.

I'm enjoying more and more as I'm getting used to the strange style in which it's written. I feel like its really building toward quite a profound message, and am pretty excited to read on.

Sometimes A Great Notion is amazing. I would say even better than One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest
