Some do live interesting lives but they're not the ones getting picked up and promoted.
Take me, i grew up in a cult, became a drug addict briefly, got clean, became a bouncer, did a stint in the Australian Army, was a prison officer for a little while, lived remote for 5 years, so on and so forth.
I've used most of these things as fiction fodder but what books get promoted in my country? Diversity novels...transgender muslim refugee with autism fight climate change and women's empowerment while acknowledging indigenous land rights blah blah fuckin blah.
This is why little pockets of resistance like the lit renaissance are so important.

I grew up in this vile cult. In fact there will be some stories about it in my third book which is due out end of this year or early net year.
They are truly demented and insane. They make the Westboro Baptists look like reasonable people.
They abuse kids at a much higher rate than the Catholics and have mostly gotten away with it because they're smaller and more under the radar.
They keep predicting the end of the world which obviously keeps on not happening.
They shun family members who leave the cult.
They destroy lives.
Avoid them like the plague.

Dude speaking from my own experience there is nothing you can do for that kind of regret other than suck it up and make a start on living the rest of your life to the fullest.
I left high school thinking i was going to make it in the music scene and be rich and famous. Became a drug addict instead. Was a total fuckup loser by the age of 20. Got clean and spent ages 20-23 living in a doss house and going to NA meetings and reading a lot. Got off the dole and got a job working security. Got stuck in that until i was nearly 32. There you go, the so called "best years" of my life thrown away being a druggie, bumming around on the dole and then working night shift for years.
Nothing to do but tie a tourniquet around it and start moving in a better direction.
On the plus side if got some raw material for stories out of it, pic related.
