appeared on vases to tie her sandal. Vase images of shod lovers and their barefoot partners evoke an ethos which is not entirely clear, but could relate to issues of power and dominance, and may lie behind the enigmatic question of whether sexual intercourse was improved by covering the feet.
>Impressions made by feet on the ground gave the Greeks the word for ‘plain’ (πεδίον), which doubled as a sexual term, as did the verb ‘to walk’ (βαίνειν). It is no accident that in the story of her birth Hesiod only mentions a single physical attribute – her lovely feet – whose touch alone causes the earth spontaneously to produce fresh grass:
such is their sexual potency.
