I honestly have no idea. First, I am in my 20s. Second, I didn't receive a classical education like they did. Third, I am not a literary scholar.
Despite that, I think Proust has his strengths in continuing the intrinsic model Virgil left behind for epic similes and transforming French grammar for his own use (see his Essay on Flaubert's style) and Joyce has the strength of going in his own direction of purely sonic meaning, i.e. poetry as prose, and creating a universe that is purely literary.
