Looking into reading Gravity's Rainbow by Thomas Pynchon. Before I read I need to know if it's worth the time.

It sucks when the version of a book with the best cover, is also the one with this shit. I really like the penguin deluxe cover for GR, but it only comes with the pages all torn the fuck up for no reason.

Pynchon is a son of a bitch with the reader, i finished it, its pretty great but its really hard, it gets hard and has a lot of shock value just because Pynchon feels like it.

Does this edition actually have a bunch of typos, or is that just a meme?

What better version is there that is easily available for purchase in the US?

I read Gravity's Rainbow at university for a post-modern literature independent study and I just couldn't enjoy it.

Obviously, I really like post-modern fiction otherwise I wouldn't have completed an independent study on it, but I just couldn't find much of anything enjoyable about it. It might have been that I read it in a week due to time constraints, but I'm not so sure. Pynchon honestly just seemed to be throwing a bunch of stuff into the novel and delving deep into esoteric knowledge for no real reason.

Sure, he was tongue-in-cheek a lot, but I don't think it really added anything to the book or got any sort of meaningful message across. I think Don DeLillo is similar in his levels of irony, but when I read White Noise I really enjoyed it and felt like it all served a purpose.

Do I have shit taste, or are there others that agree? Should I try reading a different Pynchon novel?

So....it's basically a joke that /lit/ loves this book, right?

I got about 40 pages in and literally threw the book away. My impression was it was a prose heavy, plot light, rambling, droning mess with a bunch of scatological humor thrown in.

It had that "Hey what i'm saying is so deep, i mean i don't feel any need to explain why it's deep, but you can't prove that it isn't, so that means i'm fucking deep man...." feel to it.

Saw it first on the Simpsons before I had internet. Though I still can't grasp the whole plot (maybe there isn't one), I still keep coming back (fourth reading already) for the beautiful sentences and episodes,

Every 6 months or so I attempt this book.

That was 4 years ago.

The man who recommended the book to me said of the author's writing of it, "You can literally see the cocaine dripping off the page."

What do you guys think about the theory that Thomas Pynchon had access to esoteric knowledge, and then the only way he could make it public without endangering his life was publish literature?

Specifically, it could be said Gravity's Rainbow supports philosophical stances, prophecies, and religious moral paradigm realizations that would probably not be supported by the majority of Illuminati or other cults. There's even a section detailing freemasonry, and occultism within freemasonry.
