David Hume was one of the best philosophers to have ever lived. He wrote like he was conducting a damned symphony orchestra. I think that Hume pushed intellectualism to its furthest extreme while still living a social and natural life. I don't think that Hume treated philosophy like a neat little accessory to a shallow pursuit of happiness.

I read about Hume's ideas and can't help but wonder why philosophy is still going on. Wasn't he right about absolutely everything?

Human knowledge advances (or something) every year and the knowledge guys are getting better and better, but for an amature like me, who maybe if I really buckled down, might get to the point where I can understand 5% of what the guys are talking about nowadays, that is to say, for the unprofessional reader of normal language, isn't this guy, like, totally right?

Hey /lit/, how are you doing?

I have an eight-page paper on Modern Philosophy to deliver by the 17th this month, where we have to focus on a specific problematic of our choice found in one of the philosophers we studied (we went through Descartes, Espinoza, Locke, Hume, and Hobbes), whilst relating it to the concepts of "system" and "method" (the teacher didn't really develop on what these are, unfortunately).

Thing is, I'm not in a Philosophy major. I'm doing this as an optional course within my Translation major. My problem is that I might be at a disadvantage here because regular concepts and ideas might pass me by. I chose this course because I'm not the least bit unmotivated, quite the opposite: I'd love to study Philosophy in my free time if I didn't have shit to do from my own major, so I chose it out of pure interest.

I guess I'm asking for pointers then. I kinda liked Espinoza so I might find something there to work with, but I'm open to any suggestions (within these philosophers I mentioned above).

Fuck does anyone else on /lit/ feel guilty when they read anything not required for school? I made it a page into rereading White Noise when I realized I should be reading Hume. Now i'm doing neither. How the fuck do I get over this?

Does anyone have any information on how we take the leap from the problem of induction, to probabilistic theories? I can't seem to understand any way in which we can avoid admitting that we must take a leap of faith. Clearly probabilstic methods work, but are they devoid of a truly rational foundation?

Can anyone shed some light on the 'problem' of induction? Is it rational to use statistical methods like Bayesianism to calculate the likelihood of knowledge? I'm stuck as to whether the problem rests on the definition of knowledge being far too stringent.

One can't be objecte all the time. I've learnt ancient greek because hellenic culture fascinate me, but I had no concret reason or purpose to do it.
