Why does Parmenides assume that “unity” cannot be made of individual parts as a whole, such as 1=(.5+.5), or am I misunderstanding something?

I am about 16 pages into Parmenides, and he seems to be arguing that qualities can only exist relative to each other, which seems to be blatantly untrue considering what we now know about the world through science. Is anything he says in this book correct? Is it even worth reading? Am I the eternal midwit?
