Hi c/lit/s

I am passionate about history and biographies. I have enjoyed very much the style of Ridley and I've downed in quick succession his works on Mussolini, Maximilian, Tito, and... and... I started the one on Garibaldi and just cannot get as hooked as with the other ones. I sincerely don't know why. The character? That part of history? Go figure.

So, I would appreciate if you could recommend me something you have enjoyed very much within this genre.

I like historical accuracy but also good paced writing, with useful context and, well, pardon the expression but: history which reads like fiction, in the sense that it is not just a copy paste of numbers, places, and dates but an engaging story.

Many thanks in advance.

Can biographies be appreciated as a literary genre? Even though the pillars of a biography are accuracy and comprehensive approach while keeping the meaning, I found that some biographies are just boring, while others, using the same facts and structure, read seamlessly.

The subject comes to mind because I read Ridley's bio of Mussolini and then Tito, and now I am about to start his biography of Garibaldi. I truly like the way he writes: consistent but with an identifiable lyrical voice, with great rhythm, and including for every important step in the subject's life the right amount of context so the reader can judge by himself.

Is this a literary quality in biographers? Can a biographer be "literary creative" while sticking to the cannons of history writing?

Would love to hear others' comments.

>>Mindlessly "choosing" a halfwit ideology and then asking in the web for books to feed and "fit" into the brown shirt, without learning first about all other ideologies and not even considering making your own, personal view of the world.

Yup, I'd say you have what it takes to be a fascist. Actually, you're halfway there, Dux.

You know, it's a shame Mussolini's dead, I've been waiting for a sequel to The Cardinal's Mistress for years!
