There's nothing inherently wrong with having a magic system such that the magic in the story isn't just one deus-ex-machina after another, you just have to use a light touch. Part of why Sanderson has fans is that a lot of his audience are the sort of people who watched Naruto, and thus they're there in large part to see these extended fights where the autistic rules of the magic systems are used in creative ways.

Personally I think it's gay, I prefer magic to be as alien and unpredictable to the reader as it is to the characters in the book, who don't know what magic's rules are (if it even has any) and who see it as... Well, magic. That said, some people like it, so it has its place.
