I didn't quite understand it, but I fucking loved it. Was the narrator Fanshawe with the previous stories being pieces of fiction?

Hey guys, I picked up The New York Trilogy today as it's similar to what I want to write for NaNoWriMo. Despite the very likely possibility I won't be able to get through them this month, are there any seminal noir/detective/hardboiled books I should look into? It would certainly help when eviscerating my manuscript at the end of the month.

Also, anything similar to the meta angle Paul Auster went for, regardless of genre, would be appreciated too. Thanks.
