What does it mean to have “read” an author? Read 1 book by him or all of his books? Or does reading books about the books/ideas of said author count has having “read” the author?

I’m toying with the idea of having settings of my two POV characters “rhyme” in symbolic when not explicit ways in my book as a way of sort of drawing the reader into accepting them later as friends and love interested when the time comes. A chapter where one character is in a bar is followed by another where the other is in a different one, one chapter about travel and encountering dangers on the road is followed by another similar setting for the other character.
I’m somewhat resolved to do this to open the book but am conflicted on how far to carry it on; your thoughts??
