It's depressing because it shows a fundamental lack of awareness of the literary world. I've never been to one of these self-publishing conventions, but I have worked at a literary magazine, and the problem is we have a surplus of authors and a lack of readers. I can't imagine actual readers going to these things. It's just people looking to sell their book. What do you want to bet the other authors at these conventions bought someone else's book? I bet it's close to zero.

It's because they don't read. Non-readers all write the same way. They use the same tired expressions, the same vocabulary, the same tone.
