Ozu is social masks and passive conditioning. Japanese societal norms. Adapted from the presentation of elemental aristocracy by that of Stroheim, Lubitsch, and Griffith. Making excuses, exploration of desire, and elliptical styling.

Ozu did not extend either of these elements, and neither did he refine. He adapted and subsequently condensed. Whereas with Griffith there will be multiple parties with lack of unifying singular characterization, Ozu will aim attention toward single individual and primary family. Whereas with Stroheim, he will extend time so as to show dubiously superfluous excess of aristocratic flourishment and pettiness to expand resources for psychological deduction, Ozu will simply cut to the moral of the story with a direct address to the camera. Whereas Lubitsch will feature roundabout ways of constant reversals between exhibition of subject's needs and desires, Ozu will simply frame around single subject explored through others around ad infinitum.
