What Augustine was experiencing seems similar to today's times. Everyone is trying to sell you their pagan ideologies, and even /lit/ is full of gnostics, guenon/evola shills, etc. just like the Manichaeists that led Augustine on the wrong paths.

Anyway, what I wanted to ask is how is City of God? It's 1000 pages. I heard it's about defending Christianity when people were blaming it for the fall of Rome. Is it more straight up philosophy? Anyone read it all or just abridged versions?

Is his theology reliable or are there controversial bits that one should be wary about? I'm mainly speaking about compatibility with main Christian denominations, I know he's revered in all major ones, but not sure if they take exceptions to some of this teachings.
