Why is it so beautiful? I've read it probably five or six times and it is still just as beautiful with each read through. Probably the best sentence in the whole book, and it appears twice!

So I just finished this. Clearly not Joyce's greatest work but I found it very compelling at parts. What does /lit think of this?

it was my first Joyce novel and given his reputation I was a little worried but ended up really enjoying it, especially the scenes from his early childhood. What did you think of it /lit/?
What else should I read before attempting Ulysses?

How do I get about reading 'The Portrait...'? I've read the first few pages but the prose is... interesting to say the least.

At what point in your life did you realize it was fucking rediculous to want to write a novel?

also subsequently at what point did you realize you're writing is shit, and not better or worse than literally thousands and thousands of other aspiring writers who all very likely will become nothing, except perhaps starbucks baristas, or data entry jockies for some soulless corporation? basically what I am advising is that if you are under that age of 18 or even lets say 20 dont go into the humanites, Dont GET AN ENGLISH DEGREE, Dont for however passionate you may be get a creative writing MFA

Hey lit,

Just finished reading A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. I understand the obvious themes like religion and restrictions and stuff, but I feel as if there is some deeper message which I'm not getting. Anyone care to enlighten me?

I really like reading you know, I feel like it offers a nice sense of escapism while also giving some sort of self-improvement that other mediums don't offer. I'm happy I got into this, even though some days I feel like nothing really means anything to me. I'm just happy I've got something that's always like a 'goal' if that makes sense, something to always better myself.

Why do you like reading /lit/?

Just finished Chapter IV of Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. Holy fuck. Joyce is a god damned certified genius.

Anyone have any opinions on it? Points of discussions?

The prose reminded me of Flaubert at his purest, or Hardy at his best. Sheer ecstasy in those lines.

How'd he do it? I'm interested to see if there are any letters or references to him writing this scene in his personal papers.

Hi guys, need some help for my A2 comparative essay about two books I've never read. So far I wanted to pick '1984' and 'Brave New World' but I thought that this is a bit cliche, and wanted to challenge myself. Thus, I looked into 'A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man', and 'The Picture of Dorian Gray' and before picking these two I wanted to know to what extent I could compare these two novels - themes, movement, period, author etc.

I appreciate any help you could provide (hopefully spoiler-free if possible).

Also feel free to give further suggestions on two novels that go well with each other.
