I think second one from the left might be On The Road... but I could be wrong since it says Plume instead of Penguin.

I have a copy of this edition, but not with me.

Was there a point to all this? Finished reading it today, there were moments that were really well written, but to what end?

I've never really enjoyed reading.
I tried Catcher in the Rye, Great Gatsby, even tried Game of Thrones. Didn't like any of them. But a friend recommended this to me and I loved it.
What are some other books I should get? I was going to check out The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, since I've heard good things about that.
Also, are his other books as good?

I didn't know if I should have posted On the Road or The Catcher in the Rye to catch your eye, but this is beside the point.

Give me your best American authors and novels outside of our usual cultural lexicon. The authors who resonate with their time just as well as any Henry Miller, Jack Kerouac, Hunter S Thompson, Bret Easton Ellis, or name from the usual list. Of whom has our confederation of publishers, reviewers, and English professors in the past and present glossed over?

What the fuck /lit/? I'm five pages into this fucking book and it's the most boring, pretentious, sloppy-eyed POS I have ever read. Fuck whoever posted the recommendation in the Hunger Games thread I made last night, demanding I read 'real' literature.

Well fuck you, I'm going to finish Mockingjay right now, because I READ FOR FUN.

So why does this book gets so much hate in this place? I get it, its not 2deep4us, but I think Kerouac's prose is beautiful. I heard a lot of hate along the lines of LOL IS NOT WRITING ITS TYPING or ITS JUST A MESS. Which is funny because thats the exact same criticism square boring people tend to say about jazz, and GET THIS: Kerouac was jazz fanatic, and the "mess" was an attempt to write a story as "improvised" and free-styled as jazz music.

Whoever thinks this book has no merit its a beta faggot named John whose hobbies include stamp collecting and bird-watching, works as a used car salesman/insurance and his wife gives him 5 minutes of sex per week.

What does /lit/ think of On the Road? I just finished reading it because people have described it as life-changing or mindblowing, and although it was pretty good, it didn't really knock my socks off or anything. It might've been groundbreaking in the 50s with its tales of drug use, crazy sex, wild itinerancy, etc, but nowadays those concepts aren't as fresh or interesting as they used to be.
