Something about how DFW writes really irritates me and I can’t quite put my finger on it. I don’t want to believe in a concept like “intellectually illegitimate” because I hate academia and gatekeeping, but at the same time IJ does read like it was written by some future AI. It’s paradoxical that DFW rebelled against hyper corporate commodification of culture when his book READS like it was designed in a board room by executives for how best to appeal to disaffected suburban men. Quite tragic since almost everyone who is introduced to IJ is essentially being set on the path to soulless literature. How many men who seek refuge from the hideous dehumanisation of post industrial society have been led astray by DFW when they could have simply read Hemingway, Salinger, Nabokov, or Joyce!

I remember meeting a lefty in college who once told me art used to be “selfies for rich people”
I don’t think I’ve ever cringed harder at a statement before.
