i like books that follow two or more generations of families. Any recommendation? (ex. one hundred years of solitude, brief wondrous life of oscar wao, the god of small things, sour heart)

What can you guys tell me about Marquez's "One Hundred Years of Solitude"? I want significant symbols of Marquez's leanings towards Communism. Is this a feasible, or shall I say fruitful, task worth doing with this novel?

Allright niggaz, I'm about to read this. Since I'm pretty illiterate and ignorant all around, is there anything I should know before (or after) reading this? Thanks.

Was there supposed to be something special about this? I read, and reread, but the only thing that it never fails to arouse in my is my penis. Of course, it doesn't mean it's bad, it's just overrated, is what it is, in my opinion.

Anyway, as compensation, I want to feel upset. So I want to read either Tess of the D'Urbervilles or The Sound and the Fury. Which should I go for first?

It's no more science fiction than 1984. And it's a classic.

But okay, fine. How about this?

Magazinesandnewspapersfag here.

I just read A Hundred Years of Solitude. Meh, whatever. Fiction. Novels. Who needs 'em?

Anyway, point is... um... I can barely read. How do you, like... I mean... I figure this was kind of a tough one. Lots of characters living, dying coming back to life, dying again, disappearing, reappearing, "magical realism" means fucking anything can happen and it doesn't have to make sense.

When you read something this involved, what's the expectation for how you're going to keep track of all this shit? Like, I'm reading it again and I'm noticing subtle foreshadowing and even just plain details I didn't notice before. Do you, like, write up character analyses and timelines and shit or am I just a faggot?

A full generation of “black sheeps” is what I almost want to label the entire Buendía clan. All black sheeps, all cursed, all abandoned. This is unique in that the tragic hero of the story is not one, particular character but the entire family line. Each one is a tragic hero, a protagonist with their pros and cons, but it is each their defect that marks them different and a Buendía.
I found the magical realism of the work a bit hard to accept at first, and by at first I mean within the first 30 pages, as it is written in a strange way that seems to elucidate the mundane as magical and the magical as mundane. This turns into a highlight of the story, helping set it against other novels or stories of the Magical Realism tradition, which only later did I realize was an inspiration from the author’s grandparents and how they told stories to him. The best examples of this odd juxtaposition come at the beginning, when the magical attempts of Jose Arcadio Buendía are described very tactfully, as normal, then the first sexual experiences of his sons, Aureliano and Jose Arcadio, are written with hyperbolic metaphor and grace.
Without going into an all out critique of the work and focusing on its many and varied themes, symbolism, and literary significance, I want to put forth a simple, concise review of a work that is deemed “a modern classic”. Originally skeptical of that term applied to this novel, I have since been brought over and realize its place in literature as a “classic” by any and all standards. Enjoyable, uniquely written, pertinent and uncompromising. Score: 7.5/10. Re-readability: Definite.
