And, well, if you want to live in the best possible way, then it makes sense that you would want to orient yourself in a hierarchy of value to attempt to attain the highest goal that you can reach. But the thing is, is that that goal can’t be something attainable, it can‘t be “of this earth”, because well, once you attain it, then it’s like, where do you go from there? So, when Jesus is talking about the Kingdom of Heaven, he’s talking about something that represents the HIGHEST POSSIBLE VALUE of all possible dominance hierarchies — and you can visualise this, if you imagine all these pyramids layered on top of each other, the Kingdom of Heaven would be at the top, but because it’s not in any one of them specifically, it transcends ALL of them. And then it’s like, okay, this rich guy in the parable is asking what the sacrifice is you need to make to orient towards this transcendent value, because if you orient yourself only to one of these dominance hierarchies then it follows logically that you’re still not orienting towards the absolute highest value. And — this is what makes this story so heartbreaking — he doesn’t understand! The rich man just doesn’t understand that the ONLY way to ethically orient yourself towards the one value that won’t inevitably disappoint you in its fulfilment, the one value that transcends all other dominance hierarchies, is through the HIGHEST POSSIBLE SACRIFICE, and that’s what Jesus requires of the people who follow him, he’s requiring us to give EVERYTHING up. But it’s like, even that ISN’T enough, because even then no-one is worthy of the Kingdom of Heaven, because how could anything of earthly value possibly equate to the thing which transcends all dominance hierarchies? And people get stuck just like the rich man in the story on the trivial detail of money. NO, it’s not about that — it’s Jesus calling us to make the highest possible sacrifice and even then acknowledging that that sacrifice is minuscule in comparison to the infinite and transcendent value of God.
