Because the moment science fiction becomes broad enough to fit the tastes of critics, it becomes "literary fiction". Case-in-point is 1984 and Brave New World, obvious science-fiction pieces canonized without any reference to this fact

Literary fiction gains value by being exclusive, by claiming to offer something more than just entertainment. Sci-fi and fantasy are very popular genres, and as a result there is an immediate clash simply through flooding the market. More popular genres for authors also inevitably have more schlock, and because there is less canonizing of sci-fi by value the genre gains stereotypes.

"literary" fiction is an attempt to create value, it is a brand hierarchy consciously managed and organized in a way genres can never be. In short, it is the cancer of the book industry. A nebulous parasite that can never really be discredited because it absorbs all challenges while artificially stratifying and overvaluing the work it chooses to present. Arbitrary values are imposed and developed through exaggerated analysis of text to fit the brand agenda. The end result is that the genres that actually gave rise to books included in the brand are minimized to the point of being unrepresentative skeletons, which are used to turn to further analysis intended to increase brand value.

Hence, the marginalization of sci-fi

Modern Russian literature and the Russian literary language date to the beginning of the 19th century. The undisputed greatest figure of this period is Alexander Pushkin (1799-1837), who set the standard for prose, poetry, and drama in Russian. Pushkin himself was not gay, but he was what we would call gay-friendly, confident enough to write to his gay friend Philip Vigel about the relative merits of the latter's potential male bedmates. Pushkin's references to homosexuality are light and humorous, but not disapproving. The second great writer of Russia's Golden Age, Mikhail Lermontov (1814-41) also had some familiarity with gay sex. In two bawdy poems written when he was 20, he describes the sexual antics of his fellow classmates in the Cavalry Cadet School.

I know what you're getting at, but in all fairness the zine can't see into the future. We're working with an unpredictable audience full of people who all demand something and concede absolutely nothing. We appreciate the feedback, but honestly.
