Can someone recommend several good science fiction and fantasy series to me? I recently went to a bookstore and saw many that looked interesting, but I had no idea where to start. I'm the kind of person that has to read a series from beginning to end, regardless of length. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I think the variation on the original picture is interesting. Although it often does not pertain to the subject, I see people posting my attached image more than the original. I wonder if someone, somewhere, gets a quick chuckle every time he sees his work re-posted instead of the original.

First: Why the hell does this thread exist? Anyone who honestly believes that Wheel of Time (WHEEL OF TIME, for Christ's sake!) is better than Lord of the Rings, a masterpiece of modern literature that pretty much defined western fantasy for a hundred years... Wow.
First of all: every single thing that happens in Lord of the Rings was out in motion by Sauron. EVERYTHING. He created the ring, he wants to take over the world... there's very little room to say something like "Gandalf is the antagonist because he stirred everything up for no reason." No. Read the book, realize motivation, and then criticize.
Second: arguing over the definition of a word? Really? I guess this needs clarification: a word has but one definition, which includes all of its various meanings. If your meaning of a word is not in the definition, it is fictional. It does not exist. An antagonist is not someone who causes imbalance, although that is a common theme antagonists share; an antagonist is someone acting against the protagonist(s). That is the only qualification for an antagonist. Gandalf is not one. Sauron is.
