How do I become "educated" or "cultured" or "well read"?

My knowledge is pretty deep in a few areas and really shallow in others and I don't know how or what it even means to close the gap. I've been told university was named such because it was supposed to comprise a universal education. Old school scholars were familiar with science and the humanities. You couldn't join the cool kids philosopher club unless you were already well versed in geometry.

How much of each subject should a normal adult familiarize themselves with? Is the fact that most of us don't know basic multiplication tables from middle school a fucking travesty or does it not matter if you can't find immediate application?
