Nothing is necessary here, a book doesn't have a core that you can either understand or not, your understanding will always be a recollection of a bunch of stuff you know and feel and how it relates to the thing you're reading.

You may read it without reading Homer, but why would you? Just like you can skip the first Harry Potter book and read the others, but why would you?

If you want, try it out and if you're left frustrated or bored by it, drop it like a brick and go read something else. You may return to it later, who knows, maybe in 30 years, it's not a race.
