Albums make the most sense really. Because chances are if you like everything by an artist you listen to music more for the sound than composition (not that it's a bad thing but I find people tend to grow out of that). You could say that you don't like every song of an album but with any competent band most of the songs on an album will be of a similar stabndard since they comprise the best of a certain period of recording.

Of course in the same way, even if you don't like every album by a band, the ones where you like most you will call your favourite bands when asked.

I think genre is a bit useless unless you're telling someone which you prefer out of Classical, Jazz & Rock music.
