It’s for a more mature palette. Read Butcher’s Crossing if you want to see Williams still under the impression that verbose and stylistic flourishes equate to quality or meaning. It’s subdued purposefully.

This isn’t to say there isn’t a place for the writing you’re probably looking for, there’s room for everything after all, but try to approach the material in its own terms rather than what you think it “should be”.

Hey guys, willing to do a crit for crit with anyone.

I'm working on a new novel based on a cross-Canada bicycle trip I did with a buddy last year. Playing around with a minimalist style. The central themes have to do with purpose, alienation (of course), the value of struggle, and the pursuit of goodness. The main arc is the progression of my own mental health.

Each chapter narrates a day in the journey. Here are the first two days.

hey lit I've been a closeted writer my whole life (age 24) and I'm about to workshop an excerpt of a novel I'm slowly working away on. Before I send off a draft - do you folks have any comments or feedback? (1,500 words)

I am looking at novels exploring reincarnation and time travel as literary themes. I have read Joyce Ulysses and the tetralogy of the Sea of Fertility by Mishima: I would like to read good stories where the element of reincarnation or time travel is part of the recurring themes of the book. Cities of the Red Night by Burroughs was also hinting at time travel and was an interesting thing to read. Any more suggestions?

ask yourself, if no one were to ever find out you are reading what you’re reading, and i tell you now you’ll never have an opportunity to discuss it, and you even give up fantasizing about those two things occuring, would you still be reading it?

From James Joyce, "A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man" (Chap. 4):

The snares of the world were its ways of sin. He would fall. He had not yet fallen but he would fall silently, in an instant. Not to fall was too hard, too hard; and he felt the silent lapse of his soul, as it would be at some instant to come, falling, falling, but not yet fallen, still unfallen, but about to fall.
