I've been asked to teach a 5 session course on Shakespeare this summer, with each class covering a different play. If you guys had to pick 5 of his plays to teach a class about, which would you go for to make sure you're covering everything that's important about his work?

How do you cope with the fact every art form has already peaked /lit/? Everything made after them just looks like cope.

I have read few of his plays and everything was so archetypal and dumb, all characters just randomly pick out of following

>death
>betrayal
>revenge
>greed
>grief
and aren't capable of any complex emotion.
It goes like:

Do plays count as novels for the purpose of the list?

Is there a particularly good copy of his sonnets? Are the Folger Shakespeare Library editions decent?

What are the best individual editions of his plays? I have his complete works in one volume but it’s too big to want to read with a lot of the time and I’m looking to get a few of my favorite plays in single editions that hopefully have good notes and maybe some good criticism included.

Writers like Goethe, and especially Shakespeare, are often praised for not having a philosophical system. It is seen by many as one of their virtues that they don’t see the world in any one particular way. But women are incapable of developing a philosophical system of their own. They’ve never done it. So by accepting this view of great writing, are we not tacitly accepting that a woman could potentially be a truly great writer? Even though we know from both evidence and intuition that this cannot be? Are we to let the Goethes and Shakespeares of the world open the gates to women?
