I like his short stories most of all. I haven't read anything since dropping After Dark like a chapter or two in. I have to be in a mood for full tilt Murakami. Kafka a best

I read After Dark. I enjoyed the everything until he decided to rush things for no reason. Like Eri getting back from the fish-pond reality without explication, or shit that went nowhere like Shirakawa's story. It feel uncomplete.

I'm reminded of this little gem. I'd change "weird sex" to "uncomfortable sex" though. It's not like they're having crazy, kinky sex in his books. It's always just very awkward & unerotic.

Basically what this anon said, >>18212378 there really isn't anything wrong with Murakami, but if you've read one of his books, you've read them all, save for Norwegian Wood which may be different, but I'm sure retains his trademarks.

He certainly draws on similar themes and imagery throughout his work, but if you like (and I do) its comforting to know you pickup his new work and know exactly what you are getting. He doesn’t have much range, but he also doesn’t throw 'misses' the way someone like Pynchon does.

I 've read Norwegian Wood,Tsukuru Tazaki and Kafka on the Shore from this guy. I enjoy reading him but at the end I feel like I didn't gain anything of substance. His "philosophy" seems to be extremely disjointed and superficial and oftentimes his "prose" reads like fb cover quotes put in sequence.I love his allusions to other authors that motivate me to go read them instead. Should I bother reading Wind-Up and 1q84 (got baitd into purchasing me in pb a long time ago)?

95% of his audience is white college age women
almost all of his books blend together (pic related)
his output has been declining severely in quality over the past few years, and his fame is growing inversely proportional to what remains of his talent
his books are the earmark of middling IQ normies trying to breach the threshold into true literature and fine artistry but ultimately only a small leap above drugstore paperback trash (purgatory between the patrish paradiso and the vulgar inferno

oops, have a bigger one. If you can't deal with all of his books having all of the elements in pic related while exploring radically different themes, Murakami may not be for you, granted.
