What does /lit/ think of Grapes of Wrath? I just finished and enjoyed it a lot. I still think East of Eden is Steinbeck's best of the 3 I have read. Mice of Men was pretty awesome. Any other Steinbeck I should read?

I am looking for a book that deals with a permanent and high % unemployment. The scenario is that there will never be full employment anymore due to technological advances or whatever and there is an ever growing group that is unemployed. How does the world deal with this? Any books on this subject?

Just finished reading Grapes of Wrath /lit/, and I absolutely adored it. Can we please talk about it?

The book had many remarkable aspects, the narrative structure being one of the best. Alternating chapters that focus on the story of the family with others that address the reality that encompass them; the alternation between micro and macrocosm was extremely well done, and helped to accentuate the tragedy of those people.

The plot itself was also really good, the disgraces of the family felling touching and believable. Some moments of the history are unforgettable: the description of their house being decomposed by nature, the Hoovercamp (when Tom was bullied on the road and started crying with anger I felt so bad), the government camp (I teared up when they arrived and saw that there they could maybe live a dignified life), the peach farm, the torrential rains on the ending (the image of the family walking alone on the road, through the rain, gave me chills). It was just a brilliant, brilliant book when it came to plot and imagery. Even his prose, despite simple, was good, conveying everything it should in a simple manner.

Hey, /lit/ I have 2 weeks to finish this book for school and then we have a test on it. I assume many of you have read it because it's a classic. Any points in the story that I should pay close attention to in terms of character development or symbolism?

The book pictured there is none other than "Grapes of Wrath." The question is... is the book worth reading or should I sparknote that shit?

Also, is reading Ulysses worth the effort?
