I thought this was great, very evocative. You come away feeling like everything around you is pulsing.

That said, parts of the third act felt really clunky to me. The Dylar plotline felt uneven, and the book didn't really develop the themes it felt like it was trying to explore with it all that well. I liked the symmetry between earlier stuff like the plane crash and the toxic event (the way everything becomes discrete as death approaches/recedes, how humans put it all back together in the long run, how all of this is mediated by surfaces etc), but as the Dylar stuff rolls around it feels like all of that is fucked to the side to make room for a slew of other commentaries the author wanted to ply into the book last minute.

I still loved it, hoping Underworld is even better.

Thanks for reading my blog.

In the novel, Murray tells Jack that the latter's primary problem is that he is incapable of repressing his awareness of his own mortality, hence the dread.

But what struck me is the fact that Murray doesn't repress his awareness of anyone's mortality, including his own. His seems almost aroused by the thought of oblivion. What gives? Is it, unironically, because he's Jewish?
But then aren't intellectual Jews renowned for neuroticism?

Help me understand Murray.

Or is it just shit?
I think it's the second one. I find it hard to believe so many have referred to it as a classic.

I need something with same vibe. I've already read some other of DeLillo's books (Zero K and some stories in Angel Esmeralda).
Whenever I look for similiar books all I get is recommendations of Pynchon and DFW. DFW I've already read of and enjoyed and Pynchon isn't really my thing.

So what should you do about fear of death? The book wasn't that helpful.

What were the sunsets about? What were the professors' talks in the cafeteria about? What was Mercator's snake quest about?
