Didn't know this was what I wanted until it was too late. 30 is fast approaching and I don't know what to do. Don't fall for the STEM meme, guys. If you wanna make money do business or some shit. I'm working alongside felons with nothing but a high school diploma and making more than if I was doing something directly related to my degree. If I wasn't married I'd drop everything to backpack and write my book and starve to death.

I've got a stem degree with no formal lit training. Only applying to one school cause I can't move right now.

Writing sample is two short stories and a novel excerpt. Definitely not gonna get in haha.

So we all know that there is nothing new under the sun and all plots and characters are just stolen from other works, but my question is this: at what point does something begin to seem obviously derivative? For instance, the novel I'm writing features a private religious school and a powerful, history altering object. It's also written in a sort of postmodern style. How likely is it that people will draw comparisons to Infinite Jest? Am I overanalyzing this? What are your thoughts on originality in fiction?

How do you go about titling your stories or novels? Do you make shit up or use a line from the work or steal famous quotes? I'm thinking of swiping a Shakespeare quote for my novel but I worry it'll be too hackneyed.
