I awake from the dead of sleep from my alarm chirping. The chirp is to rouse me out of where I’d like to be; a signal to remind me of my defeat. I lost from the moment of my birth and so defeat has been instilled in my essence. Somedays I wash myself, although lately I’ve resigned myself to whatever film of filth that clings to me. I rise from my bed with aches and pains pleading for me to stay in bed. I reluctantly refuse because of the punishment that awaits me if I don’t fulfill what’s expected of me. I shed my attire so that I can metamorphosis into the beast of burden- Modern shackles come in 3 pieces. We drive to the masters. I give me wife a kiss, slip on the mask I was instructed to wear at all time and depart the car to start the drudgery of my servitude.
It starts with moving papers from one corner of my desk to another. Master needs to sign this paper and that, being little more than a lap dog to tree pulp and ink. Master needs to know what paper’s I’ve been moving about. Master needs to know who I speak to. Master needs to know how I’m enriching their life at the cost of mine. Master needs to know why I can’t work longer hours. Master needs to know when I cannot tend to my duties due to some inconsequential thing like checking with a doctor about my health or god forbid, becoming ill.
I hate talking to the other beasts, they chirp and honk and grunt and croak while trying to speak. You see, the mask warps how words come out. The few words I can understand sound like something the Master would say, poor devils.

Are there any books about the rat race of modern society? It seems the only jobs I'm qualified to do are fast food or supermarkets which must get hundreds of applicants all who are preferable to me. And that's if you pass the psychological mind games of their online tests.

Thanks for this. I'll probably read this first, since it is shorter, and keep it in mind while I read Tolstoy's piece. But right now I gotta go to work
