Chomsky isn't a serious historian and sometimes overstates his case, although I think the central thesis of the book is mostly accurate, or at least was for most of the 20th century.

Pic related is the superior dissident book. It's sad how unknown it is. The guy who wrote it was an incredibly popular professor at Cornell but I guess no one reads history these days.
