There's a strange probity to this statement but not such that it conforms to what most people would react with.

I'm in my mid 30s and only just finished college after years of idle and self destructive behavior. I've been overqualified for evey job I've ever held, endured a lifetime of people telling me I'm smart while flunking out of special/gifted programs, and being endlessly bored in all undertakings while finding them perfectly doable. I only got my degree in the end through a combination of perverse bitterness and stigma, alongside the fact the military paid for it through an accelerated program I did alongside my job.

Poor people do not want to be rich, even if they think they do. Even now I really don't care to do the things I understand are required to accomplish what defaults to advantageousness or goals or whatever you want to call it. The fraction of the poor that are capable of long term thinking in the abstract don't actually believe in or value its benefits. It's almost impossible to be practically capable of becoming wealthy and not accomplishing this, because it's a question of what you might call psychology more than anything. You can labor under the delusion you are equipped to do something, but if you never do clearly that wasn't true.
