The most depth I thought of with an individual character was the Sora, the AI of the Anteater
A quick summary:
>in 3007, Sora is made as a combat class AI. He is one of the first of his kind
>spent two decades of experience in the field
>the Anteater crashes, killing the old crew
>Anteater left stranded for many years until a young scavenger finds it and meets him
haven't put much thought into the aliens though
