Books are fucking expensive.
That said, what good hauls have you gotten recently?

I picked up David Sedaris' "When You are Engulfed in Flames" (it is his worst, though)
a Charlotte Brontë anthology (sans Jane Eyre)
and, of all things, a beat-up Infinite Jest.
All that for around $15,
but then I get a 'strong recommendation' for How to Write a Sentence (and How to Read One) and it's like fucking $20, for a 100 page hardcover.

ha-ha, you're fucking wrong about that.

Just got to thinking of this idea /lit/ and wondered if anyone here is interested. Not 100% sure on how to get this sorted out, though.

What I want to organise, is a full on fictional writing competition. What I would want to do with this, is to give all of us a specific sentence, or book title, to base an introduction of a book around.
For example, if I were to give you a title, or phrase such as "The Horizen of Regret" (Terrible example, I know) you must write a short introduction to a book based upon it. The introduction doesn't have to be the chronological start of the book, as a lot of stories, it could start with the end, before jumping back to the past. I wouldn't want each eample to be overly long, say a 2000 word max limit?

The problems that could occur for this would involve how to actually post all the results. Everyone can't get on at the same time on the same day to post into one thread before it 404's, so if anyone has a /lit/ related forumboard we could use for submissions if ya'll, that'd be great. Oh yeah, I guess the hand in date should be for Sunday evening at the earliest?

Lots ofifs and buts, but I'm sure a couple of you would be interested. Let me know what you think guys.

Pic unrelated.

Hey /lit/.
I guess i can be open and say I am 16 years old and want to get into books more.
I dropped out of school a while back and i don't want to end up flipping burgers for the rest of my life, so i want to expand my mind with some literature.
So, recommend some of the greatest pieces you have read, so i can get started.
'Thanks in advance for being helpful and not like /b/ :D
