I just finished watching the movie Fight Club and I also read the book like days ago - I'm not counting but it's surely less than 2 weeks.

Both were great, imo.

Reading Palahniuk's account of how he came up with this story - that came with the book, not even marked appart from the story's chapters by anything - it's interresting to note how the entire story seems like it was made up to fill the space between and around mentions of the rules of fight club. Palahniuk wanted to repeat rules along the story, so he made up a short story arounde these rules, and later an entire book around this short story.

Fight Club was written to fill up space around the kind of clever idea any one here gets in his bus ride to work. Now it's a cult movie, and perhaps the novel proffessors will talk about at the very end of the term in 2500's English litterature courses about 20th century litterature. Only time can tell.

How the fuck can a hick come up with a -perhaps - culturally major novel by filling up the space around a disputably clever idea like a novel's chorus?

Fight club isn't brilliantly written, it isn't groundbreaking or inventive. It does represent something we can all relate about. But we can all relate to any of the myriad of erotic novels published every year, so I don't see what it means.

Tyler says - to paraphrase - that the media makes us think we're all gonna be rockstars and celebrities even though we won't. Palahniuk is a celebrity, after having done the kind of novel any one of us can come up with: adding junk around one clever idea. We all have clever ideas. We can all add junk. All of us could write Fight Club.
